Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science

The Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science was established in 1978 with the establishment of the Białystok University of Technology, although its origins date back to 1967 and the Technical Mechanics Team at the University of Engineering in Białystok.

Currently, the Department employs 28 people: 12 independent research workers, 12 assistant professors, 2 assistants, 2 engineering and technical employees. There are also 7 PhD students in the Department.

The scientific and research activity of the Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science focuses on the following directions:

• modeling of brittle and ductile fracture processes in construction materials, including anisotropic and non-homogeneous materials;
• mechanics of materials, also composite materials, including polymer fibrous composites, metal layered composites and sandwich structures;
• problems of thermomechanics concerning frictional heating of brake system and clutch system elements as well as laser heating of body surfaces;
• experimental research and modeling of fatigue failure accumulation in a complex load condition and at elevated (or high) temperature;
• prediction of strength and fatigue life of structural elements in a complex load condition, taking into account the effects of gaps and notches;
• analysis of tribological wear processes in the processes of dry friction and jet erosion;
• experimental research and modeling of multiphase flows, in particular the dynamics of formation and flow of gas bubbles;
• problems of the theory of elasticity and thermoelasticity of media with gradient coverings.

As part of their teaching activities, the employees of the Department conduct classes in the field of broadly understood technical mechanics, computer methods in engineering, basic sciences (mathematics and physics), electrical engineering and electronics, as well as entrepreneurship and innovation. There are also classes for Erasmus + students.
