The Department of Biomaterials and Medical Devices Engineering is a part of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and has been established in 2021. The Department currently employs 12 employees including 4 independent research workers (1 professor and 3 university professors), 5 assistant professors and 3 assistants.

 The scope of research work and scientific profile of the Department is as follows:

• designing of microstructure and mechanical properties of biomaterials such as: nickel free stainless steels, beta phase titanium alloys with low E (Young) modulus as well as Co-Cr-Mo alloys for knees and hip implants and dentistry application,
• biomechanics – simulations and modeling of implant-tissue interaction and muscle activity,
• biodegradable polymers and composites biomaterial based on the PLA,
• ceramic-glass based materials for medicine application,
• advanced technology in medicine, especially: Powder Metallurgy and Mechanical Alloying, 3D printing and surface engineering (PVD methods),
• construction of orthopedic and prosthetic device,
• modeling and design of dental implants,
• rheological and tribological aspects of friction and wear of the metallic implant and synovial fluids,
• fritting and fritting corrosion investigations of the titanium implant alloys,
• physicochemical properties of artificial saliva with magnetic nanoparticles.

As part of their educational activities, the employees of the Department conduct lectures in the field of biomechanics, biomaterials and advanced biomaterials in medicine, biophysics, tribology of the implantation materials, engineering and technology of medical devices, orthotic and prosthetic, orthopedic design, advanced manufacturing of medical devices, bio-prostheses and bio-manipulators, among others. In addition, they conduct classes at postgraduate and doctoral studies, as well as for Erasmus students. There is also one student research club called “Orthos”.
