The beginning of the Department activities dates back to 1963, when the Technical Thermodynamics Team and the Laboratory of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Evening Engineering School in Bialystok were established. On this basis, the Department of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics was established, which was later transformed into the Department of Thermal Engineering and Agricultural Engineering. After reorganization and location changes, the current Department of Thermal Engineering was established on its basis. Currently, the Department of Thermal Engineering is headed by prof. Dariusz Butrymowicz.

The Department includes teaching and research laboratories, which cover the basics of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, thermal and refrigeration engineering as well as advanced techniques of supersonic jet ejector refrigeration systems, analysis of fuel properties and multiphase flows.

Currently the staff of the Department consists of: 4 professors, 2 research associates, 5 assistants, and 1 engineering assistant.

Research and scientific profile

Research carried out in the Department concerns the area of thermal power engineering, refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump technology, as well as chemical and process engineering. In particular, the scope of the past and present research projects covers:

  • experimental research and modelling of single-phase and two-phase ejectors for refrigeration systems and heat pumps;
  • experimental studies of flue gas purification jet reactors;
  • research on heat transfer and flow resistance in packed beds;
  • research into innovative fruit and vegetable refrigerated storage systems with the use of indirect cooling systems;
  • development of non-conventional air conditioning units ;
  • thermal degradation of heat exchangers in steam power plants;
  • mathematical and experimental modelling of mass and heat transfer phenomena;
  • thermal-flow analysis of compact heat exchangers;
  • modelling and experimental studies of two-phase flows with phase change in mini-channels.

The works were carried out in the form of research or research and development projects, as well as implementation projects – carried out in cooperation with renowned research units as well as domestic and foreign industrial partners –  see the projects section.
